Antidepressant study sheds no light on brain function

A new look at antidepressants has changed the way physicians about how these drugs affect thinking. While doctors often advise that a few weeks for a patient to take notice a difference in the mood, this study shows that SSRI drugs start working within a few hours.

SSRI means reuptake inhibitor of serotonin. They work by preventing the brain from receiving the neurotransmitter serotonin, which improves mood between. Antidepressants such as Paxil brand Celexa. Zoloft, Lexapro and Prozac are SSRI drugs.

In this study involved 22 healthy volunteers doctors who have never had any kind of antidepressants and are each a single dose of SSRIs. Then they used an MRI to see if and how the brain responds to the exploration of a single dose before taking the drug and three hours later.

The images showed that connectivity in many brain regions was reduced after this single dose. Only two areas, in fact, showed a better binding of the brain with detection signals (thalamus) and the part of the brain with the engine controller (cerebellum) is associated.

"We expect that SSRIs have a significant effect on such short notice and for it to cover the entire signal from the brain," says Julia Sacher, the Max-Planck-Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. She continues: "It was interesting to see two models that seemed to go in the opposite direction."

These opposing trends suggest that the rapid response of the brain may way to give long-term weathering.

For now, however, researchers do not know exactly how these changes are connected definitive effect in combination with SSRIs, may have a longer time. They are still not like other antidepressants have similar results.

"In a perfect world, we consider not only the SSRIs, but all kinds of medications and non-pharmacological interventions" Sacher said. "It would really help as a single therapy for someone down in the middle of an episode"
