Family meals play an important role in the health of children

11:56:00

Dr. Mercola

Solitary room has for busy families find it difficult to make time for family meals more often, especially if all adult family members work outside the home.

Traditional family meals accounted for more than a common room are a time for good conversations, and links to the royal family.

Unfortunately, today many meals are eaten at red lights or in front of the computer alone. The United States ranks among the 23 countries in the 25 percent of children, the main meal of the day with their parents eat several times a week. 1

Although solitary meals occur on a regular basis now, but recent studies have shown that you do not or to help the welfare of their children. Families who enjoy making the effort to eat together at least three or four times a week significant benefits for your health, happiness and relationships.

The division in the preparation and cooking of interest has traditionally been overshadowed by the desire of convenience foods in recent decades, although the evidence suggests that these trends could begin to reverse itself.

If you eat alone, you have many companies

The family meal bottomed out in the 1950s, when people started to think about cooking dinner for the family as a major drawback. As food has become more readily available and can be stored in the freezer and pantry, the idea of cooking from scratch has been almost a thing of the past.

Maybe people are starting to offer meals to lose the safety and socialization, the family. Research on food trends varied, indicate that values and attitudes can change.

The relative scarcity of shared family meals are associated with a lack of desire for them, people always say that you have good memories of their childhood while eating together.

Several recent studies show how American families are struggling to find time to eat together. In thinking about these statistics take into account that 27 percent of households consist of one person living alone. 2

  • A new report by NPD in March found that Americans consume more than half of their meals alone; People are less likely to eat alone and more likely to eat breakfast and lunch (see chart). 4
  • A study in 2014 found that the majority of American households eat together less than five days a week. 5
  • A 2013 Harris Poll found that among the six Americans with at least one member of the family living, only 58 percent say the food with the other at least four times a week, but the proportion of 86 per cent yield dinner at least once a week together. The survey also found that the frequency of family meals with each generation decreases.

Children living with their families eat healthier eating habits and obesity less

2013 documentary The family meal on the relationship between the epidemic of childhood obesity and the role of the dinner with the family could fight they play focused.

Research shows that children who have family meals together three or more times a week are more likely in a healthy weight range and have better food choices. They are more healthy and less likely that the wrong foods to eat, and to eat less likely to develop eating disorders. 7

Interestingly, a study by Cornell University found that eight families (two adults and children), the dinner in the kitchen or in the dining room eating a significantly lower that families who eat elsewhere IMC. For children who remain at the table until all are done with the diet was associated with lower body mass index.

Researchers reported at the European Conference on Obesity 9 that children, at least once eat dinner with their parents in the week, 40 percent are more likely to be overweight than those who do. This might say something about the importance of family rituals and routines for the emotional health of children. Referring to the predictable family routines 10 Science Daily reported:

"The researchers believe that to be early predictable support in life with regular participation in family routines by encouraging and caring environment, what greater family organization and can provide a sense of security and belonging. This can have a positive impact on the socio-emotional health the children before school entry and contribute to their school life and future success. "

Eat the psychological costs alone

Children who eat with their families, are not only less obesity, less profit, but also psychosocial and behavioral problems are very deep. For example, young people who with their families, eat at least five times a week are 40 percent more likely to get A and B in school than their peers who do not share family meals. . They are also 42 percent less likely to drink alcohol, 59 percent less likely to smoke cigarettes, 66 percent less likely to try marijuana, and tend to be less depressed 11 Other research shows that each additional family meals, the adolescents: 13th December

  • Improved self-esteem and life satisfaction
  • Behavior self-assured and helpful, others and better relationships with their parents
  • Vocabulary and better academic performance
  • Absenteeism and lower teen pregnancy 14
  • Increased stress resistance

Family meals help to convey the culinary traditions of Health

The benefits of family meal not only time spent eating together, but also from the time that the purchase of food, preparing meals, cleaning, maintenance and even a garden. Involve your children teaches them about nutrition and how to work together as a family. Children can also learn environmental awareness and the importance of food and supporting organic and sustainable farms.

Common meals gives you the opportunity along recipes and family traditions special type of learned your mother or grandmother. You can teach your children, soaked the importance of the process for the preparation of traditional foods, such as fermentation, the juice, sprouts, nuts and raw food preparation. These lessons are invaluable for building a rich heritage of family and your children the tools they need to live a long and healthy life.

Family Eating less 'Dinner' and 'family' is

What is practiced in family meals, such as influence on our children? Or is the family meal ever? These are the questions that teachers Ann Meier and Kelly Musick tried to answer deeper into the data. The retired teacher variables such as income, time spent with children (meaning, tasks or activities, such as participation in extracurricular events), as children were monitored, and the overall quality of family relationships. Once these factors have been deducted, discusses the family meal has an impact on the mental health and behavior of children.

Musick Meier and published the results in the Journal of Marriage and the Family, and the results may surprise you. 15, 16 do not conclude that it is the family ties that count in other words, less family dinner food. about the "dinner" and "family". They identified the essential requirement as follows :. "The impact of family meals in children depends on the extent to which parents use the time to talk with their children and learn about their daily lives" 17

So, if your family consists of dinner upset about unfinished tasks and duties, or text messages to all table, or if there is a fight, everyone to get dinner on the table, it is unlikely that you will see the most benefit. But if your food is pretty full of sharing and genuine empathy and connection, and everyone is on board, the benefits are many. Not to reduce these data the importance of eating together for the physical health of your child and encourage appreciation and education about food. But when it comes to psychosocial factors and the dynamics of the relationship, there is more than just sharing space on the table.

Clever Conversation Starters Lunch

If you are looking for ideas on how to eat your family to bring more meals together, family meals project could be useful (DPF). 18th The FDP is a resource to help families "to improve the frequency and quality of their interactions to lunchtime. "Your site contains a wealth of advice to kids of all ages throughout the process of food preparation through fun dinner games, recipes, ideas for conversation age and the instructions for activating engage your own kitchen in a makeshift camp Iron Chef ! As for the table talk at dinner, columnist and author Bruce Feiler three interesting strategies to increase the fun and meaningful time to talk about the family: 19

  • Word Update: Since your child should know about 3,000 words per year, a word, a day in the seminar table you. Feiler suggests a diary or journal on the table and ask each person to find a word that is not known. Googling in this case allowed.
  • Autobiography Night: Encourage your child stories about how he overcame his past success or failure will drive to encourage him to say, tell the future performance of "who, what, when, where, why" history dinner.
  • Pain points. Focusing on a current "pain point", which is essentially a difficult situation for all, for example, has your daughter, a project with someone you do not like to do, or your teen does not find a match dancing. In the debate, the members of the family share their own experiences and come together to dissect to teach the dilemmas and possible solutions, the children-good problem solving skills. If someone has a pain point, could you talk about a current event.

Tips to connect with your child or teenager

In the complex world of today, there are many forces pulling in family relationships, especially when children are in puberty. Even the best parents can sometimes be challenged to find a way to connect with young people. John Gottman, Gottman Institute recommends that you at least five positive interactions for every negative, in every respect, which I think is good advice. 20th If you are having trouble connecting with their younger family members around the table, have dinner or elsewhere, you should find the following ten principles, the center of compassion, communication and commitment helpful. 21

1 Accept the temper of their children Spend time with their children 2
3 Touch intentionally to their children every day 4 Teach your children important values and life lessons
5 tenaciously to their children 6 Encourage UNIQUE
7 stiffness caution 8 Hug rituals that promote coexistence
To develop 9 Help for children LEGACY 10 model appropriate use of words in communicating with children and before them

More food for thought

Done for family gatherings, you should make a priority. One of my favorite sayings is: "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail" and that certainly applies here. This allows you to eat your family together, not only in the store, allowing you to prepare food, but also the selection of a time that works for everyone in all cases.

You can not, because of the math club, football and cheerleading practice bring three teenagers, so much a family dinner? Schedule a weekly family breakfast or answer a bedtime snack. Even a meal at the weekend may have a positive effect. Be creative and make your meals regularly, stress-free and enjoyable as possible!

High Fructose Corn Syrup to kidney stones connected: 5 facts to know

11:55:00
high-fructose-corn-syrup-and-kidneys

Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, HFCS, or short, an artificial sweetener is commonly used in processed foods. It is found in many foods you least suspect, such as bread, biscuits, pasta sauces, and even pickles. Groups such as the association and the companies that rely on corn syrup, high fructose (HFCS) corn refiner almost certainly continue to market it as "natural" product. The truth is always clear, with studies showing the enormous health problems arising from long-term consumption. While most people consume today is based mainly on processed food diet, it is difficult for most people in moderation eat a little.

HFCS and kidney stones: What's the Connection?

Recent research suggests that the increasing incidence of kidney stones in men, women and even children seem to be related to regular consumption of HFCS. Research shows HFCS promotes the formation of two of the four types of kidney stones, which is both easy to prevent. Here are 5 facts you need to know for yourself and your loved ones against the formation of kidney stones induced protection HFCS.

1 Eating fructose increases the risk of kidney stones

Not marketing campaigns distract working industry - Fructose consumption increases the risk of kidney stone formation. The National Kidney Foundation's website says, "eating too much fructose with an increased risk of developing kidney stones correlates." [1] In addition, evaluation of data from more than 200,000 people who consumed more refined fructose was identified more kidney stones develop. [2] Only the refined fructose showed no correlation with fructose is not related to kidney stones.

2 of drinking soda increases drastically the formation of kidney stones

Hydration is an important part to prevent kidney stones. Drinking soda does more harm to hydrate. refined fructose sweetened soft drinks contain HFCS to be soft. A Harvard study found that those who drank regular soft drinks had 33% higher risk of kidney stones. [3] Another study found that consumption of cola has encouraged the formation of calcium oxalate (a type of kidney stones). [4] The authors of the study recommend avoiding cola drinks as a way to reduce the risk of kidney stones.

Metabolize fructose 3 oxalate

Some people are naturally predisposed to oxalate and allows you to convert, fructose at a faster pace oxalate. This increases the amount of oxalate in the blood are mixed with calcium in the kidneys.

4 increases the risk of urate stones

Finished fructose increases the amount of uric acid excreted in the urine; Natural fruit fructose not. [5] High levels of uric acid or hyperuricemia, promotes the formation of kidney stones, and gout. Researchers have observed, in particular, high levels of uric acid by HFCS were directly on the metabolic syndrome, obesity by a particular disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and kidney failure. [6] [7] Please avoid fruit juices and sodas contain HFCS, corn syrup and other artificial sweeteners may reduce the risk.

5 children aged 3 development of kidney stones

Incredible as it may seem, it is very true. Increasingly, small children, and I mean less than 5, develop kidney stones. Despite the growing number of children, however, suffer from this condition, researchers agree that the modern diet of highly processed as a major factor. [8] food, the parents and the doctors say that if much HFCS is removed from the diet, the occurrence is of kidney stones.

A modern problem?

Forecasting, your chance of developing kidney stones that are easy to be used. If someone in your family has kidney stones, probably very likely to develop them as well. But that changed. Traditional thinking holds men are also more likely to develop kidney stones; But a growing number of women and children pain and suffering from this terrible disease.

HFCS reducing exposure

To prevent kidney stones, is the common idea to drink plenty of water to avoid calcium supplements and reducing salt intake, protein and oxalate-rich foods. Of course, all foods contain some of the healthiest around like spinach, dark chocolate, sweet potatoes and walnuts oxalates. My recommendation is first made to eliminate HFCS, corn syrup, additives and other chemicals. The Corn Refiners Association can not hear you, but supports the science.

Do you have kidney stones? It is HFC phase of food aid? We want to hear from you! Share your thoughts and comments with us below.

Water policy is health policy in Detroit

ALICE The recent report of the Michigan United Way clearly articulated, the reality for many low-income families. In Michigan, an income of $ 16.818 has hit $ 8.41 per hour, the most for a person to work, but not all of the basic life needs of a. Water, such as health care is a necessity, not a failure of man. Lack of water causes great problems of public health with the disease and many other unintended consequences, including impacts on a child's ability to learn. Solution of these problems will require billions of dollars and unnecessary loss of precious lives. As a resident of Michigan, we pay now or pay later.

Citizens have the right to expect our elected representatives to reflect solutions to problems that develop an understanding, that "liberty and justice for all" requires approaches to protect the citizens who can not, sometime officials, so that basic needs. Water, health, must be a financially viable resource. The breakdown of costs for all of these needs, all of us, even if we. Facing a difficult financial situation in our lives

The answer is not cutting off access to basic needs, if invoices are not affordable or privatization of the service. The answer is, etching policy, the citizens protects against low income lost basic needs and no additional financial burden added, her life with the bills that are not available to develop their income. The development of employment, with incomes that meet the basic needs of a family, is also important.

We need to unite to demand fair and equitable policies in access to basic needs such as water, in Detroit and in Michigan.

Michael Koch, an epidemiologist in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, and colleagues examined whether men in the prostate, lung, colorectal and ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial showed a correlation between hair loss and male prostate -Krebs, both conditions "seem to share common pathophysiological mechanisms," the report said.

Cook and his colleagues included just over 39,000 men in the PLCO cohort the age of 55 and 74 who remembered their hair loss pattern between. The men had no cancer diagnosis when they enrolled, and his hair had memory loss for 45th birthday. About 18 percent of men with hair loss remembered 45 More than 1,100 people were eventually diagnosed with prostate cancer, and nearly 600 of these cases involved aggressive prostate cancer.

Compared with no hair loss, hair loss in the front and crown moderate hair loss with an increased risk of aggressive prostate cancer risk later in life. The risk for men with hair loss in 45 developing aggressive prostate cancer is about 39 percent higher than for men with little or no balding. If you any kind of prostate cancer in general or only non-aggressive prostate cancer, but these differences were negligible.

"It is conceivable that in the future, hair loss may play a small role in the assessment of risk of prostate cancer and may contribute to the discussions between doctors and patients about screening for prostate cancer," Cook said.

Health is LGC president to resign

11:56:00

The Board of Directors of the Company to discuss since the local government plans on Wednesday the role of Vice President after the resignation of President Gary Pitner.

"It's only health problems," Pitner said.

"Balance my professional and personal life."

Pitner is also Managing Director of the Northwest Regional Planning Commission and has served on numerous boards and committees.

Richard Brown is Vice President of the LGC.

The next election of officers for the annual meeting in October planned, as required by the statutes of the group.

Birth Control, third party payers, and the politicization of health care

11:56:00

The system of health care in America is a mess, and we can ascribe most of the blame on the government. In short, we have the power and the efficiency of markets, such as Medicaid, Medicare, tax code distortions and other forms of regulation and intervention, we have a system that is paralyzed by a crisis of the third charge created.

There is no logical reason to expect that consumers are smart shoppers, after all, if they are required to pay only 11 cents for every $ 1 of care they consume. And providers have little incentive to be efficient if they know that consumers are not very price sensitive.

Now let these ideas to the political controversy over birth control. Only, as I explained in July, there is no fighting in the birth control. As far as I know, no one who is trying to ban contraception.

The real battle is whether the government require health insurance include coverage of contraception (and some abortion).

Writing for Bloomberg, Megan McArdle explains that the contraceptive mandate Obamacare is stupid because a modest cost, the routine should not be covered by insurance at all.

I'm not very patient with the political struggles over contraception mandate of the Affordable Care Act health. Generic pill ... are not normal spending overpriced is used by millions of people, exactly the kind of things that insurance is not designed for. All around this cost a little spread, while your policy administration costs.

In addition, the best policy for birth control to allow without a prescription.

In other words, the problem of reducing the State Regulation and not imposing a mandate!

Have the pill ... over-the-counter and not available as an element of the recipe. It's a great idea. It was a great idea existed before Obamacare and will continue to be a good politician, even if ObamaCare somehow disappears in the dust. Physicians assess the risk of you birth control, simple questions you can ask yourself: Are you over 35 years old, smoker and concerned about family history of stroke in the beginning?

Seems like a good idea, right? Especially on Republicans who want less regulation and also appeal to Democrats, allowing easier access to contraception want to address.

Republicans are on board, according to Byron York.

The GOP has ever, to make a new policy ... answer ... The idea without prescription birth control pills without a prescription 07.24. It has become a trend among the Republican candidates in Senate races across the country. In North Carolina, Republican Party candidate Thom Tillis recently adopted. So Ed Gillespie Virginia has. Mike McFadden Minnesota. Gardner, Colorado. And one of the main proponents of the initiative is a candidate for president in 2016, prospective Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. Gardner ... first made the proposal in an op Denver Post in June. The pill was safe since it was adopted 44 years ago, Gardner argued. "If other drugs have this type of panel to approve the purchase without a prescription," he wrote. "Brand medications such as Advil, Pepcid, Claritin, Prilosec, and many others, once sold recipe, but moved to Over-the-counter sales once it had proven to be safe and not likely to be victims of violence."

But some Democrats are hostile.

In fact, a columnist for the Denver Post is very angry that some GOPers support access over-the-counter pill.

Modeled after the Colorado Senate candidate Cory Gardner Americans are a handful of Republicans in the midterm races across the country now accepting over-the-counter pill without a prescription. Do not be fooled. It is a dishonest act which might be the most expensive pill for women actually ... But women already pay for these pills as part of the coverage of health care is purchased by employers. Why should we pay twice? What's going on ... However, if the pill is available without a prescription? Insurance companies are likely to cover stop. This means that women continue to pay health insurance premiums and additional costs for the pills out of pocket. And ... the freedom to discuss the risks of physician visits for birth control could also by paying pharmacy consulting to determine whether women risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, or pain be replaced preventing migraine pill safe use, reports the American College of Obstetricians and gynecologists. Actually it is not a "cheaper and easier" alternative -. "Mostly wrong" why PolitiFact evaluates the application of Gardner

I strongly suspect that the author wanted to make a partisan attack on the Republican Senate candidate in Colorado. After all, the most important and most difficult of the left, including humans and Vox Think Progress, promoting access over-the-counter birth control.

But suppose he really believes what she wrote. In this case, F would be obtained for all economics professors, because insurance companies are obviously the cost price of their policy. So, when the mandate expires, and birth control is available without a prescription, insurance companies can reduce the cost of policies sold.

In other words, women would not pay twice. In fact, they pay less, but it is clear that those that health plans by the employer to understand, are part of the total compensation of employees.

There is another reason, other than partisanship, birth control sold over the counter to allow some on the left to oppose Republican proposals. And you will not be surprised to learn that self-interest plays his role.

On behalf of the federal, Ben noticed that Domenech Planned Parenthood wants the current approach only hold prescription.

You may think that Ben has made a big mistake, or I misunderstood. Finally, is not that contrary to the stated mission of the organization to reduce unwanted pregnancies?

Now, noting that Ben Planned Parenthood may be more interested in maximizing the documents in reducing pregnancies.

Interestingly ... Planned Parenthood pushes over-the-counter contraception. Why is that? Why Planned Parenthood, the availability of contraceptives and women who must consult a doctor for slimming? That sounds terribly patronizing them. Birth Control ... is an important lead generator for family planning, where they can not afford their existing target as a source of prescription birth control without damage to lose its status as an institution. Well ... you can understand why they do not want potential customers to have the freedom to CVS or Walgreens or Rite Aid instead of going to family planning - the people and other services worth much money the taxpayers $ 540 million in fiscal year 2012 alone. And if you do not offer these services, you can not charge the taxpayers for it. So ... you want to keep the government in control of ban-the-counter birth intact.

Here is a picture of Ben article Showing "what percentage of Planned Parenthood" services "are related to prevention." As he emphasizes, "is more than a third of the company."

So I guess that makes sense - at least amoral perspective - the organization wants to restrict access to over-the-counter birth control.

In addition, the GOP plans to improve access to birth control is not a step into uncharted territory.

Here is a map from a group for a reform of the extreme left, which shows that over-the-counter birth control pills are for the most women in the world.

Closed share a last - part of the information from experts in the law - and very convincing.

Women already have access to includes the found counter Plan B, the high doses of hormones in the pill.

... The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) was considering oral contraceptives over-the-counter (OTC) for over twenty years. "Plan B" emergency contraception over the counter was last year. This is a step pill is just a stronger dose of the same hormones that make the pill regularly. There is no good medical reason for the differentiation. But in the United States, regularly the pill remain stubbornly behind the pharmacy counter and delay.

In other words, the usual argument of the Regulation that the conditions are necessary, because consumers can not be trusted to make their own decisions with high doses of drugs.

But the government has already done the-counter Plan B in blocking similar access to birth control pills. Go figure.

PS Planned Parenthood is not the only interest group that was so shameful and embarrassing.

PPS If you want to know what happens with health care in the absence of the ubiquitous third-party payer would like to see this remarkable image.

PPPS Since this topic was the birth control, we will be the opportunity to take our collection of Sandra Fluke Browse mood. Just in case you do not remember, I was a student 30 years old, who got his 15 minutes of fame with the demand that others pay for their expenses. Anyway, if you want to laugh, check   this great video the reason this   funny cartoon, and four other jokes   Here.

PPPPS In a separate question, I have to replace my two cents late last year at a debate in libertarian circles, when the fullness of the American welfare programs should be by a grant from "basic income" that would be given to all Americans. To guarantee a minimum income type.

I realized that the current system is a mess, but I suggested that decentralization was a better approach.

It seems ... that there is nothing worse than the current system. But ... what is to denigrate what we have today, and instead give each a kind of basic income? I agree ... but only in a certain way. I like the idea of radical reform, but I think there is a better way to Rome. It's called federalism.

But if someone on the head and said a gun: federalism was not an option and demanded that I choose between the "basic income" and the status quo?

There is no reason obvious answer, but I guess I prefer the devil, because I know of fears that could more redistribution and more government.

And I'm not the only one with this opinion. Here is what the proponents of more redistribution wrote about the concept.

Basic income, unlike the programs that we have now, are politically easy to grow once it is in place. If ... a large redistribution program you have, at a high level, you can overcome enough public support opposition concentrated rich who pay the bills. ... Thanks to the support of basic income, libertarians are walking into a trap. Great fear of the anti-redistribution has always been that the masses, easy to use the power of majority rule voting more money for themselves. As it stands, makes the fragmentation of our redistributive programs it easier for anti-redistribution to drill holes in the safety net. If the system were fragmented replaced by a large universal program, the result would be a huge gift redistribution be a politician.

But maybe I'm just a pessimist. Tyler Cowen has a different perspective.

Say ... an accident of history, to extend basic income supporters in power for a term and passage of this legislation. Over time, these income transfers would be larger, more visible, and would be at least at first glance contrary to workers than the public stomach for it. My prediction is that it will limit along a number of possible dimensions, starting with the job requirements (in part) for people without disabilities. Under the most plausible at the level of basic income hypothesis, most people would not even expect to enjoy, be a net beneficiary potential program. So ... I think that intuition: "Why send money to people who do not work?" They displace the "I want me as someone who helps others, that" feeling.

I guess it depends how the "basic income" was developed depends. If the government sends checks for all (as some think), then "plausible hypothesis" Tyler on the receiver would be a mistake.

This reinforces in my mind that my idea was good. Come and learn federalism Washington on issues of redistribution.

The decentralized approach has been very successful in Switzerland and is the system that corresponds to the constitution.
