BioCryst Pharmaceuticals say they have developed a new drug that safely inhibits the symptoms of flu patients when administered within 48 hours of the onset of flu. A new study, recently published, showed that a single dose of NAI can effectively and safely symptoms associated with influenza virus, how to alleviate the viral shedding and reduce fever. This is not a pre-made flu vaccine after the flu.

The study evaluated the results of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical studies. After the presentation of Rich-author Whitley, University of Alabama at Birmingham, "On the basis of clinical data, is the first peramivir neuraminidase inhibitors (NAI) that are proven safe and effective as a treatment to be single dose for patients with acute uncomplicated influenza. According to a retrospective pooled analysis of two single doses of peramivir by intramuscular (IM) clinical studies, alleviated the symptoms of flu such as fever, much faster than the placebo arm study. "

Were carried out in two controlled studies, 427 were adults, the flu symptoms had given a single injection of peramivir in the first 48 hours signs. The injected drug is found that his fever 24 hours before those who received placebo decided. Other symptoms have been reduced 22 hours before the subjects in the placebo group as well.

Although the drug itself is not entirely new, it is not currently not approved in the United States as the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). If the drug meets the standards and requirements of the FDA, BioCryst the peramivir would be the first new NAI will be in about 10 years. It would also be the only treatment by injection of a single dose of influenza virus in the United States.

In Japan and Korea peramivir has approved since 2010 over 1 million Japanese patients received the drug yet, although there are some 27 clinical trials in which 2,700 patients in clinical studies. The flu hospitalizes about 200,000 thousand people per year, claiming 36,000 lives. The flu is a virus that constantly mutates, so tender with one of the vaccines and complex process to keep pace.
